Stop lying to your users

Chances are your app is lying to your users. I know you don't mean it. Building truthful apps is hard. But you've been lied to by so many other apps you use and it is extremely frustrating. This frustration not only makes everyone's day worse, but it also makes users get out of that app as quickly as possible which for most apps is bad for the bottom line. So what's the lie? Well you'll have to come to the talk to find out! Don't worry though, I'll not only explain to you what the lie is, but I'll also show you how to correct it and delight your users in a way that moves the needle.

Building a Better LMS, One Tiny Block at a Time

Web app developers encounter unique challenges daily, especially when building WYSIWYG and Rich Text Editors for applications. LMS platforms, in particular, rely heavily on rich text to facilitate collaboration among institutions, educators, and learners. TinyMCE has firsthand experience solving these challenges or platforms like Canvas, Blackbaud, Blackboard, and McGraw Hill. In this session, developers will learn how to use TinyMCE's modular solutions to overcome development hurdles in rich text editing. You will also discover how to leverage TinyMCE plugins as building blocks to quickly integrate both basic and advanced features, including security, accessibility tools, AI-powered assistance, and more, into your web application, whether it is an LMS, CMS, SaaS, or Email Application.

Plants vs thieves: Automated Tests in the World of Web Security

Web security is vital in an evolving environment. Imagine your web app as a garden, defended like "Plants vs. Zombies." Our automated tests, like the vigilant plants, identify vulnerabilities. Instead of an endless fight, they act as defenders, addressing issues like thieves, intruders, or zombies if we stay on game terms. Join this session to learn how to ensure web security through your automated tests, emphasizing the fundamental testing types you know instead of focusing on tools only: Helping you navigate cyber threats without introducing new dedicated tools and ensuring your web apps stay secure.

Extending reactivity to the server with Convex

Convex extends the reactivity of your webapp to the server and the database. Use Convex to simplify managing server state, stop polling, and solve your cache invaliation problems once and for all. Write backend functions in TypeScript, get great autocompetion, and run your backend functions with low latency and no cold starts. We'll also go over principles that are especially useful when you're not using Convex: reasoning about when to invalidate items in the client cache of server state and being aware of the potential for different endpoints to return inconsistent data.

Improving app performance by using background jobs

This talk offers a gentle introduction to a new paradigm of durable workflows by walking the audience through a common use case: user onboarding email campaign. I’ll show how the DIY approaches tend to be slow and unreliable — or require significant investment of resources. Instead, by embracing background jobs you can deliver a great User Experience and stress-free ops. More and more companies favor short development cycles and lean approach to headcount. Being able to own entire business workflows end-to-end turns (formerly) front-end teams into empowered product teams.

(React)ive State Management: Enter Observables

In this talk, we are going to explore an innovative approach to React state management. Harness the power of RxJS to craft a signal-like architecture, simplifying complex state interactions and promoting highly reactive components. Who says React doesn't have signals? 🚀

Testing in a world of Copilots

More and more we are relying on tools such as Copilot and AI to do our job for us. And doesn't it feel great! As we become more productive and ship more code we end up with more uncertainty. The code looks right. It most likely is right. But what if part of it isn't? How can we have full confidence in the code we ship? We can't count on code until we test it. The combination of testing and copilots is an effective one, using Copilot to generate our code and Playwright to generate our tests.

First-Class Auth Experience In Frontend Applications

Over the years, Auth (authentication and authorization) has been considered a secondary concern in frontend applications, often implemented in the easiest way possible and left for the backend to handle. However, with the increasing importance of privacy, security, and data-driven applications, various features have been added to the auth stack. Passkeys, biometrics, fine-grained authorization, approval flows, and other similar features are now taking up more space in frontend development. The question now is whether we are prepared to make auth a top priority in our applications. In this talk, I will give an overview of the latest access control technologies and how they are integrated into frontend development. I will also demonstrate a new approach to frontend auth using open source tools such as Hanko, OpenFGA, and OPAL. The objective is to create more user-friendly and usable access control flows in frontend applications. The talk will include live demos and code examples.

Open Source eCommerce with Alokai

In the last few years, we witnessed a huge growth of a new approach to eCommerce known as headless architecture, where we can leverage modern Javascript frameworks like Nuxt and Next and communicate with underlying services through API’s. While it brings a lot of new possibilities and removes the boundaries of eCommerce platforms when it comes to UI development, it introduces a whole class of new challenges. In this talk, you will get a deep understanding of what makes a great eCommerce storefront and learn how to build one using Open Source stack from Alokai. We will use the Alokai Connect, a data federation layer, to connect with Shopify and Storyblok API’s. Once the data is in place, we will build a simple storefront in record time using Storefront UI, an Open Source UI library. During the talk, you will learn about headless architecture, practical examples, and performance best practices that will make your storefront fast even when it grows over time!

Integrating AI and Browser API Voice Recognition on Web Application

I will present a personal web project developed, involving the browser's native speech recognition API and AI for generating dynamic HML components or responses through voice. I want to bring an overview of technologies such as React, Vite, Tailwind, OpenAI to our AI provider and the browser API, Speech Voice Recognition. I will provide an overview of all the technologies and how I configured and integrated these tools to generate the application. Let's understand how to integrate speech recognition and AI (openAI) and the possibility of generating components as the user speaks.

Why is Lit 🔥

Every day a new JavaScript library is born, every week a new framework arrives and every month a front-end developer needs to rewrite a date picker 😢 LIT is a modern library for creating component libraries, design systems but also sites and apps. LIT components are web components and as such work anywhere you use HTML. In this talk, Lucien will show what makes LIT be on fire! Web components and their interoperability combined with template literals for templating and adding just enough sauce for reactivity and other boilerplate utils to keep the overhead as low as 6KB (compressed and minified). In short: Web components, (template) Literals, Modern tooling, Close to the platform, Evolves with the platform. Even shorter: "it's on fire!"

Modern CSS does what now?

In 2024, we've seen adoption of some really interesting and useful CSS features, where the need for JavaScript or compiler frameworks like SASS are becoming obsolete. Let's take a look at features and APIs we can use to build our user interfaces, just using standards! We will go over things like layers, modules, container queries and other stuff and we'll have a look at the benefits of using these.

Getting Fluent with React

In this session, we'll explore React's internals, the problems it solves, and how it solves them with its rendering architecture and model. We'll also understand the previous rendering model that was stack-based and contrast it with the current model that is tree-based. Finally, we'll explore some of the newer concurrent features to create highly performant user interfaces with React.
